Physiotherapy

Our aim at Cheshire physioactive is to get you better in the easiest and most efficient way possible. By the end of your assessment we aim to give you a clinical evidence based diagnosis for your problem, a rational explanation as to why you have the ongoing symptoms (if this is not already obvious), and identify the different treatment options open to you to get yourself back to normal as quickly as you can. This process is not the same for everyone and will depend on the features that we identify in the examination and history taking.

Treatments that we tend to use will generally fall into categories of ‘hands-on’ manual therapy, Exercise Rehabilitation, Behavioural modification, and Advice and Education.

Depending on all these factors, we will then also be able to indicate to you how long the process of your recovery will take. Once better, we can offer advice on how to keep yourself fit, healthy and pain free.

Sports Rehabilitation

Sports rehabilitation is an essential component of our service provision. Our sports therapists work closely with our physiotherapists to provide enhanced exercise and rehabilitation prescription and supervision. In order to return to a ‘normal’ state we will work on loss of muscle or joint range of motion, regain muscle strength lost through deconditioning and disuse and even relearn optimal ways to move in a pain free way. Our fully equipped indoor fitness suite and outdoor rehabilitation area allow rehabilitation to be tailored to the specific needs of individual patients.

Manual therapy is combined with massage and soft tissue mobilization to complement rehabilitation and get you back to full fitness as soon as possible.

Massage

Massage Therapy if you are suffering aches and pains from work, feeling the effects of sport or physical activity or just stressed with modern living- then the chances are massage will help. At Cheshire Physioactive our massage therapists offer a wide range of manual treatments which will help you get your life back on track.

Massage can help:

a) Relieve stress
b) Improve athletic performance
c) Relax tissues
d) Boost immunity

There are of course different types of massage from the very gentle (Swedish Massage) to the more targeted (Remedial Massage) or for those with specific needs (Sports Massage). But whichever category you may be in most people find it a pleasant and rewarding process.
Our therapists and some of our physiotherapists provide both Remedial and Sports Massage for our customers and whilst sometimes this may only take a couple for sessions to address a specific issue, there is a lot to be said for booking regular sessions.

Some customers like to use our voucher system to surprise family and friends with a present which they will really appreciate. But most are simply treating themselves.

Effects of Massage

1. It stimulates sensory receptors in the skin and soft tissues.
2. It stimulates the blood flow in the area.
3. It does not shift lactic acid.
4. People respond differently to superficial and deep massage.
5. Physical contact has good psychological and emotional benefits.
6. It reduces tissue tension.

Massage Treatments

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage is a gentle, more classical form of treatment. The aims are more general aimed at stimulating the relaxation response within tissues and your nervous system reducing muscle tension, stress and tissue discomfort. This is often the more enjoyable form of massage, if your aim is to be chilled and relaxed when you leave!

Remedial Massage

Remedial massage uses more advanced techniques aimed at helping localised tissue pathology e.g. postural neck pain, flexibility of tight muscles. This type massage is more focused on addressing specific goals within your recovery and management of your problem. Your therapist will adapt their delivery depending on the clinical signs that you present with, and will communicate with our physiotherapists to achieve the best outcome for you.

Sports Massage

Sports massage uses a variety of techniques aimed at preparation or recovery from sports or intense physical activity. Although ‘sport’ is in the name this type of massage, it is not exclusively directed at sportspeople. It is just as likely to aid the recovery of a hill-walker as a marathon runner, or someone with a very physical job.

If you are unsure what you need, our therapists will be happy to directed you, and adapt their delivery depending on your needs and preferences.

Acupuncture

What are the benefits of acupuncture?

A growing body of evidence-based clinical research is discovering how the body responds to acupuncture and its benefits for a wide range of common health conditions. A lot of people have acupuncture to relieve specific aches and pains, such as osteoarthritis of the knee, , headaches and low back pain, or for common health problems like an overactive bladder. Other people choose acupuncture when they can feel their bodily functions are out of balance, but they have no obvious diagnosis. And many have regular treatments because they find it so beneficial and relaxing.

Exercise Rehabilitation

In order to return you to a normal healthy state, you will often need to restore the loss of either muscular or joint range of motion, regain muscle strength lost through deconditioning and disuse, and even re-learn optimal ways to move, which allow your body to function with less pain. In order to regain these qualities, you need to perform specific movements. These movements will be selected based on your first examination and your diagnosis. The frequency, duration and difficulty of the exercises will depend on the problems that you present with, and what you are able to commit to.

Prehabilitation and Postoperative Rehabilitation

Prehabilitation has been demonstrated as important component of joint replacement success. With increased waiting times before joint surgery maximizing strength, preventing deconditioning and normalizing movement patterns is increasingly important.

Early post operative treatment will maximize the benefits of surgery. We work closely with all of the surgeons in Cheshire following post operative guidance and provide regular updates on patient progression.

Behaviour Modification

Trying to get you to reduce the stress on the injured site will help for a speedier recovery. This can involve looking at your posture, the way you sleep, your breathing, your physical training loads and programmes or looking at your working routines. The relevance of your behaviours should become evident at your first assessment.

Advice and Education

This is often a huge part of what is required to progress someone, and is sometimes all that is needed to get someone better! If you understand your problem, you become more able to take an active part in your recovery. You can modify what you do more effectively, if you understand the stresses and strains that are being placed on the painful area. Often when you understand your problem better, you gain more control over the pain, being able to reduce it with certain movements or positions or actions. This in turn helps to reduce worry, and helps to motivate you to get even better! Understanding your problem would be considered a primary goal for us after day one. Once you crack this, you are half way there!

Physiotherapy Guided Pilates

At Cheshire Physioactive we are delighted to be able to offer specialist pilates sessions led by Anthony Lyons-Martin. These can be delivered on a 1:1 or small group basis (maximum of 5 participants ). This ensures you receive expert individually tailored tuition .

Benefits of Pilates

Pilates is a low-impact form of exercise that promotes good posture and improves strength and mobility. The goal of Pilates is to take an individual from the early stages of rehabilitation and dealing with acute pain to developing a body that is healthy and free from pain and discomfort. The beauty of Pilates is that all exercises can be modified to suit your needs depending on what stage you are in your rehabilitation program.

Your more traditional Personal Training or gym based exercise program tends to focus on weight loss or muscle gain, whereas Pilates (especially Pilates for rehabilitation) places emphasis on the individual needs of the client by assessing their injuries, developing their weaknesses and strengthening the whole body. Mobility is a key component, with the end goal bring an overall increase of strength through improving balance, stability and functionality throughout the whole body.

In the short term, Pilates will help with your immediate injury or niggle, whilst developing long term strength and functionality as you progress through more complex sequences.

Other Treatments That Help Reduce Your Pain

Other treatment options would include taping / strapping, braces or orthotics to unload mechanical stresses on certain body tissues.

We are able to use certain technologies to determine loading patterns which might be contributing to the strain on tissues. These include the, video analysis, running assessments, gait analysis, shock wave therapy to name a few. These novel approaches can give valuable information on the cause of a person’s pain.
