At Cheshire Physioactive, we use the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill as part of individually tailored rehabilitation programmes, combining reduced-weight walking or running with targeted exercise to help patients move more confidently, safely and effectively.

The AlterG allows us to reduce the amount of body weight placed through the lower limbs, making movement possible when conventional walking or running may be painful, difficult or too demanding. The level of support can be precisely adjusted, allowing patients to gradually increase weight-bearing as their strength, confidence and function improve.

Rehabilitation for Neurological Conditions

The AlterG can be particularly valuable for people living with neurological conditions, where weakness, reduced balance, altered gait patterns or fatigue can make conventional exercise challenging.

Used alongside physiotherapy and targeted strengthening exercises, it can help patients:

  • Practise walking in a safe and controlled environment
  • Improve gait quality and walking pattern
  • Build lower-limb strength and endurance
  • Increase confidence with weight-bearing and movement
  • Exercise for longer with less fatigue
  • Progress towards more normal functional movement
  • Gradually increase loading as strength and control improve

The ability to adjust the level of body-weight support means that exercise can be carefully progressed according to each individual’s ability and rehabilitation goals.

Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation

The AlterG is also an excellent rehabilitation tool for a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions and injuries, including post-operative rehabilitation, lower-limb injuries, joint pain and return-to-running programmes.

Reducing body weight can allow patients to start moving earlier and exercise with less pain and impact, while still providing an effective training stimulus. As recovery progresses, the level of support can be gradually reduced to increase the demands placed on the muscles, joints and cardiovascular system.

It can be particularly useful for:

  • Post-operative rehabilitation
  • Knee, hip and ankle injuries
  • Tendon and ligament injuries
  • Stress injuries and fractures
  • Osteoarthritis and joint pain
  • Gait retraining
  • Strength and conditioning
  • Return to walking, running and sport
  • Gradual return to impact following injury

At Cheshire Physioactive, the AlterG is not used in isolation. Our physiotherapists combine AlterG sessions with strength, balance, mobility and functional exercises to create a progressive rehabilitation programme tailored to the individual.

AlterG for Professional Sports Teams

Cheshire Physioactive also offers AlterG treadmill hire to professional sports teams.

Professional teams can attend our purpose-built facility with their own physiotherapists and performance staff, who remain responsible for managing and directing the rehabilitation or training session. This provides teams with access to our AlterG facility and specialist equipment without the need to invest in their own treadmill.

The AlterG can be used by professional athletes for controlled rehabilitation, reduced-gravity running, conditioning, return-to-running programmes and progressive loading following injury.

Professional sports teams interested in hiring the AlterG are invited to contact Cheshire Physioactive directly to discuss availability, requirements and session hire.
